Theory:
That the bone structure in human hands that allows us to grasp object with an apposing thumb, evolved out of in-utero thumb sucking.
This being the case, one of the basic elements of our ability to change and impact the world (opposable thumbs) which has led us to in fact separate our selves from the world, began as a compulsive need or demand for what is not present.
This being true I could see links to dependent, addictive, and insulating behaviors.
